Born in Joplin, Missouri, James Langston Hughes was the great-great-grandson of Charles Henry Langston (brother of John Mercer Langston, the first Black American to be selected to public office). He attended Central High School in Cleveland, Ohio, where the began writing poetry in the eight grade. His father would discourage him from pursuing writing as a career, in favour of something ‘more practical’. Langston’s tuition fees to Columbia University were paid on the grounds that the study engineering.

          After a while, he dropped out of the degree course, but continued to write poetry. His first published poem, The Negro Speaks of Rievers, we also one of his most famous, appearing in Brownie’s book. Later, his poems, short palays, essays and short stories would appear in the NAACP publication, Crisis Magazine, in Opportunity Magazine, and others.

         Langston Hughes received a scholarship to Lincoln University, in Pennsylvania, where he received his B.A degree in 1929. in 1943, he was awarded an honorary Lit.D by his alma mater; a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1935 and a Rosenwald Fellowship in 1940. Based on a conversation with a man he knew in a Harlem bar, he created a character known as My Simple Minded Friend in a series of essays in the form of a dialogue. In 1950, he named this lovable character Jess B. simple, and authored a series of books on him.

          Langston Hughes was a profilic writer. In the forty-old years between his first book in 1926 and his death in 1967, he devoted his life to writing and lecturing. He wrote sixteen books of poems, two novels, three collections of short stories, four volumes of “editorial” and “documentary” fiction, twenty plays, children’s poetry, musical and operas, three autobiographies, a dozen radio and television scripts and dozens of magazine articles. In addiction, he edited seven anthologies.

        Langston Hughes died of cancer may 22, 1967. his residences at 20 East 127th street in Harlem, New York has been given landmark status by the New York City Preservation Commission. His block of East 127th Street was renamed “Langston Hughes Place”.

          Steven Paul Jobs, popularly known as Steve Jobs, was born on 24th February 1955 to Joanne Simpson and Abdulfattah “John” Jandali, two University of Wisconsin graduate students who gave up their unnamed son for adoption. His father, Abdulfattah Jandali was a Syrian political science professor and his mother, Joanne Simpson, worked as a speech therapist. Shortly after Steve was put up for adoption, his biological parents married and had another child, Mona Simpson. It was not until Jobs was 27 that he was able to uncover information on his biological parents.

         As an infant, Steven was adopted by Clara and Paul Jobs and named Steven Paul Jobs. Clara worked as an accountant and Paul was a Coast Guard veteran and machinist. The family lived in Mountain View within California’s Silicon Valley. As a boy, Jobs and his father would work on electronics in the family garage. Paul would show his son to take apart and reconstruct electronics, a hobby which instilled confidence, tenacity, and mechanical process in young Jobs.

        After he enrolled in high school, Jobs spent his free time at Hewless-Packard. It was there that he be friended computer club teacher Steve Wozniak. Wozniak was a brilliant computer engineer and the two developed great respect for one another.

      In 1976, when Jobs was just 21. he and Wozniak started Apple Computers . The duo started in the Jobs family garage and funded their entrepreneurial venture after Jobs sold his Volkswagen bus and Wozniak sold his beloved scientific calculator.

        Picasso was one of the most outstanding and important artist of the 1900’s. he is the best known for his paintings. Almost every style in modern art is represented in Picasso’s works.

        Picasso was born in 1881 in Malaga, Spain as the son of an art teacher. He studied painting from his father and several art schools. However, he never finished his college level course of study at the Academy of Arts in Madrid.

       From about 1895 to 1901, he painted realistic work in a traditional style. Then he entered what was called the Blue Period. During this time, he only used shades of blue his paintings to show the poverty he saw in Barcelona.

After 1908, he entered into the style of cubism. Among his well-known cubist paintings are “Three Musicians” and “Man With a Guitar”.

Picasso died in Mougins, France 1973. He was a really great artist.

I hope you and Auntie Susan had a good Christmas. We stayed at home, but had a couple of day trips out nearby. Our local theatre put on a production of “A Christmas Carol”, which was fun.

I go back to University next week, and this year I’m going to have to study hard for the final exams. I’ve really enjoyed the course so far, but I’m not sure what to do once I get my degree. The university arranges career interviews, but I don’t really have ac clear idea of what I want to do. Hopefully it will all become clearer during the course of the year.

Since June 1, Transjakarta has provided a 24-hour service to passenger traveling along three of its corridor: Corridor I, the Blok M-Kota route; Corridor III, the Kalideres-Pasar baru route; and Corridor IX, the Pinang Ranti-Pluit route

A bus serving one of the most crowded routes during rush hour, Blok M-Kota, still carried many passenger on its night shift – from 11 p.m to 4 a.m. – on Tuesday night. The Blok M-Kota route passes several of the city’s business centre on Jl. Sudirman in South Jakarta, and Jl. M.H Thamrin in Central Jakarta.

Although the street were deserted that evening, dozens of passengers were still queuing for a bus at the Dukuh Atas 1 bus stop in Central Jakarta. Dukuh Atas 1 is one of the most jam-packed Transjakarta bus stops during rush hours.

Around 20 passengers were on board the bus. One passengers, Damas Wicaksana, a worker at a government office near the Sarinah building on Jl. M.H Thamrin, was reading a magazine to stay awake. Damas said that he often worked late nights and was forced to take a taxi as he did not own a private vehicle. He changed from taxing to Transjakarta as as the 24-hour service was implemented.

“I sometimes get off work at 11 p.m or midnight. You can imagine how expensive it would be if I took a taxi from Sarinah to my house in Bekasi every day,” Damas said.
Damas added that he would get on at the Sarinah bus stop and get off at Benhil stop to catch a bus at Semanggi for Pinang Ranti, East Jakarta. “From Pinang Ranti, I take a taxi. I can save up to Rp 40.000 [US\)3.43] a day with this route.” he said.

Jakarta Transportation Agency head Muhammad Akbar previously said that Transjakarta would gradually expand 24-hour service to the remaining nine corridors and increase the number of buses to 80.

Currently, 18 buses operate on the night service – six for each route – and two buses are on standby asss backup. (dwa)

BRITAIN: They have a show. They have a social networking. Now comes, Wikileaks – the album. Wikileaks is branching out into the entertainment industry, announcing a “Beat the Blockade” CD intended to raise money to keep the online transparency advocates afloat.

The group said in a statement late Thursday that the CD would feature 12 song including “Where There Are No Secret,” “The Ballad of Julian Assange,” and “B Manning”.

It’s the latest attack outside the secret-busting business for Wikileaks, which has spawned a TV show called “The World Tomorrow” and started its own social network, called Friends of Wikileaks.

          (CNN) - - Saudi Arabia reported significantly more deaths from the MERS virus on Tuesday, the same day the country sacked one of its top health officials.

         The Saudi Ministry of Health reported that 282 people have died since 2012 from the Middle East Respitory Syndrome coronavirus, or MERS-Cov, a major uptick from the previous official death toll of 190.

         The new numbers came out the same day that acting Health Minister Aden bin Mohammed Fakieh announced he had relieved Deputy Health Minister Dr. Ziad Memish from his post, according to a statement on the health ministry’s website. No reason was given.

          Last week, the World Health Organization reported it was aware of 636 “laboratory-confirmed cases,” of MERS infections, which had led to 193 deaths. It is not immediately clear how Saudi Arabia’s latest figures affect those numbers. There are documented cases of the virus around the world.

          As a coronavirus, MERS is in the same group of illnesses as the common cold. But it is much more lethal: The U.S. Centers for disease Control and Prevention notes that about 30% of those infected have died.

         Those with MERS have severe acute respitory illness, including symptoms such as fever, cough and shortness of breath. Some develop more dangerous complications like pneumonia and kidney failure. There is no vaccine or special treatment.

        MERS is thought to have originated on the Arabian Peninsiula in 2012. no one knows exactly where it came from, but evidence implicating camels is emerging. In a recently published study in mBio, research said they isolated live MERS virus from two single-humped camels, known as dromedaries. They found multiple subtrains in the camel viruses, including one that perfectly matches a substrain isolated from a human patient.

Materials needed:

Step 1

Select and purchase a webcam. Decide on the purpose of the webcam, select and purchase accordingly. An inexpensive webcam is deal for home use, while a smaal remote webcam will be more suitable for security use.

Step 2

Read all installation directions before attemping to install the webcam. Remember the webcam features and follow the appropriate steps when installing the camera.

Step 3

Create a backup of the computer’s hard drive to be safe. A backup will unsure that important data will not be accidently erased by wrong installation.

How to Cut Carrots

What You Need:

• Ingridients
• Carrots!
• Equipment
• Vegetables peeler
• Sharp chef’s knife
• Cutting board

Instructions

1. Peel carrots: if the skin looks dry or thick, peel it off. If the skin looks thin and pretty, leave it on.
2. Cut the carrot into a few big pieces: Trim off the top of the carrot where the green stems attach. Then cut the carrot into 2 to 4 equal-sized pieces that are 2 to 3 inches long, depending on the size of the pieces you’re comfortable working with.
3. Baton cuts: Cut the carrot into sticks of whatever thickness you want – see the vocab list above for reference. For the perfectly square sticks, trim the rounded parts off of each side to square the edges before cutting the sticks.
4. Diced carrots: Once you’ve cut the carrot into batons, cut them across into equal-sized diced cuts.
5. Juliene (Matchstick) Cuts: Cut a thin slice from one side of the carrot and set the carrot on this side – this “bottom” will hold the carrot steady while you slice. Then cut the length of the carrot into thin thin slices 1/8- inch thick. (If your slices are bit thicker, I won’t tell.) Stack all the slices on top of each other, then cut through the layers to create matchsticks.
6. Brunoise Carrots: once you’ve cut the carrot into matchsticks, cut them across into equal-sized diced cuts, 1/8 inch on all sides.

Thai Green Curry with Shrimp and Kale

Lacinato kale ups the green in this green curry dish, providing a delightful textural contrast to tender rice noodles.

• 6 ounches rice noodles
• 2 teaspoon olive oil
• 1/3 cup chopped green onions
• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh garlic
• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh ginger
• 2 tablespoon Thai Green curry paste(such as Thai Kitchen)
• 1 ¼ cup matchsticks-cut carrots
• ½ cup unsalted chicken stock
• 1 (13.5-ounce) can light coconut milk
• 6 cups packed chopped Lacinato kale (about ½ bunch)
• ¼ teaspoon chopped kosher salt
• 1 pound peeled and deveined medium shrimp
• ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
• 1 teaspoon grated lime rid
• 1 ½ teaspoons fresh lime juice

Preparation:

1. Prepare rice noodles according to package directions. Drain and rinse with cold water, Drain and set aside
2. Heat oil in large skillet over medium-high heat. Add green onions, garlic, and ginger. Saute minutes. Stir in curry paste; saute 30 seconds. Add carrots, chicken stock, and coconut milk, stirring well to combine; bring to a simmer, and cook 5 minutes
3. Fold in kale: sprinkle with salt. Cook 3 minutes or until kale is witted and tender. Add shrimp,; cook 3 minutes or until shrimp are done. Remove from heat; top with cilantro, lime rind, and juice. Serve over rice noodles.
